Oh yeah. These kinds of incidents are quite common even in modern war, let alone back then.
Here’s another one:
USS Pompano was mistakenly bombed by aircraft from USS Enterprise but managed to escape.
All flights grounded at Newark Airport due to staffing issues - FOX 5 New York
USS Tang pictured above, was an ace US submarine… until she literally sank herself with a circular running torpedo.
